The Seminar on Environmental, Agricultural, and Energy Policy will take place in and around Atlantic City on Thursday, September 16 and Friday, September 17. It is critically important that you arrive by 9 AM for the canoe trip, which will take place at Mick's Canoe Rental, 3107 Route 563, Chatsworth, NJ 08019. Breakfast will not be provided on Thursday before the canoe trip, so please be sure you eat before arriving. Directions to Mick's Canoe Rental will be available online along with the rest of the seminar materials. Please note: Wading River, where we will canoe, is around a 45 minute drive from the Taj. We encourage carpooling for those staying over at the Taj on Wednesday night.
Readings
A list of required and supplemental readings is available at the end of the Overview. There are three readings also online for you to download and print, including a chapter to read from the book The Pine Barrens by John McPhee via e-mail. This chapter will help you understand the Pinelands further, before embarking on our canoe trip.
Schedule for Thursday and Friday
This month's panel discussions and site visits will expose you to many sides of environmental, agricultural, and energy policy including tourism, conservation, new sources of energy, as well as other key topics. Dress for this seminar is business casual, with the exception of the canoe trip. For the canoe trip, we encourage you to dress casually and be prepared to get wet!
We will canoe for most of the day on Thursday. The purpose of the canoe trip is to expose you, firsthand, to the Pinelands. Experts will be available during lunch to discuss some of the history, legislation, as well as the future of the Pinelands. A dinner will follow these events on Thursday evening.
We will go on site visits on Friday. The Red Team (from SIMSOC) will visit the Renault Winery and learn about how tourism interconnects with environmental policy. Other teams will visit the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) Wind Farm and Wastewater Treatment Facility, the Forsythe Wildlife Refuge, and Bass River State Park.
Following the site visits, and to finish off the day, we will have our seminar debrief at the historic Carnegie Library Center, back in Atlantic City. We ask that Fellows utilize the transportation we provide for this seminar, as many of the sites are either difficult to navigate (ie: Bass River State Park) or further in distance than usual. If this presents difficult for anyone, please let Sarah know.
Thank you and we will see you all on Thursday, September 16 at 9 AM at Mick's Canoe Rental, 3107 Route 563 in Chatsworth.
