We would like to thank Jersey Central Power & Light for their generous sponsorship of this seminar.
Leadership New Jersey Fellows: Monday May 12 is required. Leadership Newark fellows are invited
The May seminar will be a great opportunity not only to learn about economic development issues and view Newark at street-level, but also for the current classes of Leadership Newark and Leadership New Jersey to meet and participate in the seminar together. Major new projects are being built and planned in Newark; questions abound as to the real effects in the neighborhoods of the city's renaissance.
The Seminar Agenda, Overview, General Readings, and Team Assignments are available here on the LNJ website.
MONDAY, MAY 12
Plan to arrive at the Washington Square Conference Center at IDT Headquarters, 520 Broad Street, 17TH floor, on Monday, May 12 at 11 AM. We will begin with a welcome from Leadership Newark's Executive Director, Celia King and an overview of the seminar from Carol Cronheim. We will watch a powerful film on the Newark riots and then have a discussion with key leaders and scholars about Newark's rich history and its place as an entity of economic and community development.
We will then head over to the Prudential Center, Newark's newest attraction, for a tour and a light reception. Dinner will be on your own, in one of Newark's many great restaurants. We will provide you with a list of some of the most popular restaurant options.
TUESDAY, MAY 13
LNJ and LN fellows will spend the day together on Tuesday, May 13. This is a required day for both Leadership New Jersey and Leadership Newark. On Tuesday morning at 8 AM, we will convene at the Newark Club, One Newark Center, 22nd Floor, for breakfast and discussions with key Newark and state officials and leaders. We have invited Mayor Cory Booker, Deputy Mayor Stefan Pryor, Deputy Chief of Economic Development, Gary Rose, and others to discuss with you what is going on economically in our state.
We will spend the afternoon at a variety of site visits around the City. We will end the day with dinner at Forno's Restaurant in the Ironbound section of Newark. We will adjourn around 8 PM.
The background materials on the LNJ web site will help frame questions for you to raise during the team visits: Is downtown development helping other parts of Newark? What contributions are being made by the people and groups with whom you will meet? What role does the new school construction program play? What benefit do corporations provide to all citizens?
You will hear from people who are very proud of what is happening in Newark, and those who are skeptical. Keep your eyes and your minds open.
We will conclude Tuesday's activities with a discussion among LNJ and LN fellows on regional equity and the state's role in economic development, followed by dinner at Forno's in the Ironbound.
ATTIRE
Dress is business attire for both days, with comfortable walking shoes. There will be a significant amount of walking involved in this seminar. Dress in layers, for a variety of indoor and outdoor conditions.
NOTES
LNJ Fellows: As always (if you haven't already done so), please contact Sarah right away if you will need a room at the Robert Treat for Monday, May 12.
Leadership Newark will convene on Wednesday, May 14 for a required debriefing session. Leadership New Jersey is invited to this session.
Please note: allow plenty of time on Monday morning. Traffic rush is quite heavy on the highways and in Newark. Leadership Newark Fellows will park in the Atlantic Street lot behind IDT. LNJ Fellows should park underground at Military Park, Center Street and Park Place - across from the Robert Treat Hotel where we will stay overnight. IDT has strict security (bring photo ID), and the Conference Center is on the 17th floor, all of which will take extra time.
We are looking forward to seeing you on Monday, May 12 at 11 AM at IDT's Washington Square Conference Center, 520 Broad Street, 17TH floor!
